When Alisha, the founder and former owner of LookLoveWed, contacted us to style her son’s first birthday party, we were so excited! Not only does she have fabulous taste, but she had narrowed it down to a few really fun party themes, including Cowboys & Indians and Dia de los Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead). In the end we went with a Mexican Fiesta 1st Birthday that had all of the bright colours and flowers you see in the Day of the Dead imagery.
She wanted the party to be a fun celebration for Archer (seriously, how cute is that name?!) and his wee friends, but also a party where the adults could linger and the celebration could continue into the evening. To achieve this, we set up a few stations that would utilise Alisha’s gorgeous lounge and draw the guests outside to their new deck and outdoor seating area.
For the kiddies, we had the sweets table inside that overflowed with yummy goodies whipped up by Alisha and her mum. The space was anchored by a hand drawn chalkboard that she had made based on some inspiration she found on Pinterest. Also adorning the table was a gorgeous Mexican inspired fabric runner, miniature donkey piñata cake topper and a cute little cactus in a handmade fringe pot plant.
As the guests headed through the lounge to the outdoor space, the ceiling was draped with heaps of papel picados – those bright and colourful Mexican flags with intricate, geometric designs. For nibbles we had a salsa bar boasting multiple types of delicious homemade salsas from mild to melt-your-tongue! Don’t you just love the miniature Mexican flags?!
For the big kids, there was a margarita bar with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options, plus colourful, Jarritos Mexican soda and refreshing strawberry, mint water.
I think my favourite thing about styling Archie’s party was how unexpected the theme was for a first birthday. All of the bright colours, bold textures and piñatas made it a child friendly fiesta, but with a few grown up touches we were also able to celebrate his parents’ surviving that first tough year!
